Obituary of James Horace Stewart, Jr.
Mr. James Horace Stewart, Jr., age 84, of Flovilla, Georgia, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023.
Horace was born on Sunday, October 9, 1938, in Jackson, Georgia, to the late James Horace Stewart, Sr. and the late Sara Louise Biles Stewart. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Annette Cawthon Stewart; daughter, Cathy Kitchens; brothers, Charlie Stewart, Lee Stewart; sisters, JoAnne Oxenford; Betty Stewart Collier. Horace was a veteran of the United States Navy serving 20 years, having served during the Vietnam War. He and Martha later became the proud owners of Stewart Furniture. Horace never really retired and his job as farmer and rancher were his favorite. He truly enjoyed bush hogging, baling hay, and most of all chasing, counting, and caring for his cows. He loved road trips to see the USA, eat at his favorite coastal dives, and visit old friends. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing and years ago spent time with his Navy buddies running a shrimp boat in the Gulf. Most of all Horace loved spending time with his family, and a big collection of friends he affectionately called the extended family. As he finally began to slow down over the last year, he was happy to watch the birds at the feeder, settle down in the evenings with whoever stopped by, or with a pile of dogs and cats to listen to music and watch his girls (cows) in the field.
Horace is survived by his children, Kathryn Elizabeth Stewart, Alisha Stewart Reynolds, Cynthia Stewart Foshee, James Horace “Jimmy” Stewart III, Carol Long Barber and George Barber; John Long; grandchildren, Rachael and Robert Goodman, Susan and Ian Steele, Lee and Shannon Kitchens, Autumn and John Arnette, Brittany Barber, Molly Kitchens, Ashley Barber, Erica and Steven Williams, Lucas Kitchens, Cody Long; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gerald “Buck” Stewart, Richard Stewart; sister, Sara Elaine Stewart Ledford; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
