In Loving Memory of Kathryn Dale Mann Plant
01/07/1951 – 12/07/2024
After graduating from Sylvan Hills High School in 1969, Dale went to nursing school. Nursing apparently wasn’t the adrenaline rush that she needed in her life, so she decided to go to school to be a paramedic in the mid 70s. The first paramedic programs in the United States began in 1969, so Dale was clearly on the forefront of this profession. Dale began her career as a paramedic at Grady Memorial Hospital, where she worked for 17 years. When she started in EMS, there were very few women in this field. She worked in what had been known as a man’s world. She had to overcome gender biases and preconceived notions that questioned a woman’s ability to perform this job. She proved she had the physical strength, the technical skills, and the ability to the handle high-pressure situations. She was a trailblazer for women in this field and helped pave the way for women to be paramedics/EMTs today.
Being a paramedic wasn’t enough for Dale, she also taught EMS classes. She was well known for having a higher rate of students to pass their state certification than other instructors.
After a long shift at Grady, Dale would come home and volunteer to ride on the ambulance in Palmetto. She was a huge part of creating the Palmetto Fire Department and EMS service there. All the people that volunteered on the ambulance in Palmetto had other full-time jobs that were not in the medical field. They were certified EMTs, however, their experience came solely from volunteering. Over the years, Dale’s family was told by many people that volunteered on the ambulance how thankful they were, when they knew Dale would be on the ambulance with them. Her experience, confidence, and instincts to deal with any “bad” call helped them feel more confident in their abilities to handle whatever call they might get.
Working in Atlanta, Dale had numerous calls in some of the most dangerous areas of Atlanta at that time. While in these areas, she was not supposed to get out of the ambulance, until the police arrived, but that didn’t stop Dale. Before the ambulance stopped, she was out the door with equipment in hand ready to save a life. Her family has heard her tell many stories about the calls she went on during her Grady days, like the times she was shot at (yes this happened more than once), the times when people in gangs lead her to the patient needing treatment, how she sat with a patient being extricated knowing once the patient was freed, they would take their last breath, the times she didn’t expect someone to survive only to return to work the next day to find they had made it. One of her more interesting stories was when she was doing CPR on a patient, and as you would expect she was cussing him and telling him he better not die on her. Later she saw that patient alive and well, and much to her surprise he let her know in no uncertain terms that he didn’t appreciate the names she called him while she was performing CPR on him. Another story she shared was about a guy in a motorcycle wreck that told her not to cut his motorcycle boots off, that they were expensive, and he threatened her if she cut them. What do you think she did? Yes, she cut them off. She has been known to occasionally tell an uncooperative patient that she got paid the same whether they lived or died, so they might as well shut up and cooperate or get out of her ambulance. She was also known for sometimes hitting uncooperative patients over the head with a metal clipboard and putting them out of the ambulance on the street with only a sheet for cover.
Dale was an excellent paramedic. She was one of the best. She gained respect from her peers statewide as a paramedic and as an instructor. She was recognized many times for her heroism.
Carrying heavy stretchers, carrying equipment, picking up patients, breaking her ankle twice after stepping in a hole in a patient’s yard, while carrying them out on a stretcher all finally took a toll on Dale’s body, and she had to give up the career she loved so much. She went on to work in a doctor's office, she worked in accounting for Atlanta South Ambulance, and yes she still occasionally jumped on an ambulance to go on a call, she worked at Newnan Hospital in ICU, and she finally retired as a 911 dispatcher for Heard County.
Dale was many things to many people, a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, a friend, a lifesaver, a confidant, she was the one everyone went to with a problem. Dale touched numerous lives. She will be missed so much by so many. Dale has left this world a better place. She was a true hero.

My mother was my HERO. She loved more than anything working in healthcare. She was a Cardiac Tech, worked for Grady Memorial Hospital for 17 years, worked in many different doctors offices, she volunteered at Palmetto Fire Department, worked at many other hospitals in ICU and retired as a 911 dispatcher. I always wanted to follow in her footsteps but never did. She was the best at what she did. She met my dad and they worked together at Atlanta South Ambulance. I worked with them in the billing department and was so fascinated by how passionate they both were at how well they did what they did on a day to day basis. I'm proud to be my mother's daughter and my dad's baby girl! I was crushed when we lost him. I loved him very much. I was devastated when I lost my HERO. My mom was my everything. She would make me better when I was sick and she taught me a lot about the medical field. I now wish I would've pursued my dream of being like her, but I'd probably never be as good as she was. My mom was caring and she was the go to person of the family. She could and would and answer to every question asked regardless of what it was. She was also feisty. I got that honestly. I miss her so much. I miss who she was and what she was. She was my MOM. Mama, may GOD finally take you home to rest your tired body. May all the people you helped save over the years always remember you. I LOVE YOU. YOU ARE NOT ONLY MY ANGEL, YOU'RE NOW MY GUARDIAN ANGEL! I MISS YOU MORE THAN YOU KNOW. I wish I had a chance to talk to you and tell you just how much you meant to me. Rest easy mama!!!

I remember my mom being the caring, funny, and sometimes a bit crazy. She loved working as a Cardiac Tech, Paramedic and working on life flight with Phoenix Air Care. She loved helping people and saving lives. She was the best at what she did. People whose lives she saved thanked her when they would see her out in grocery stores, and gas stations. God Rest her soul. I will miss you and love you forever. Rest in peace Mama. You will be missed by many. I love you!
