Mr. George Alexander Tharpe, Jr., age 84, of Jackson, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at his residence. He was born on Monday, July 14, 1930 in Barnesville, GA to the late George Alexander Tharpe, Sr. and the late Mildred M. Smith Tharpe. Mr. Tharpe proudly served in the United States Navy and was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church in Griffin. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Elizabeth Miller Tharpe, and infant sister, Mary Frances Tharpe. Mr. Tharpe is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Trude and Roger Hinson of Ola, GA, Jenny and Cliff Brown of Jackson, GA; grandchildren, Wilson Wallace, Gincy and Kevin Moon, Joseph Brown and Kimberly Grissom; great-grandchildren, Liliana Moon, Carter Moon; sisters, Gloria Devoré, Meda Sexton, Josephine Marshall, Linda Fetting; brother and sister-in-law, Nolfet and Linda Tharpe; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. George Tharpe, Jr. will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Sherrell Memorial Chapel with Reverend Thomas Moon and Reverend Melissa Mobley officiating. Interment will follow in the Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be made to the Butts County 4-H, P.O. Box 315, Jackson, GA 30233 in memory of Mr. Tharpe.
