GMA ‘67, I admit that in 1966 on varsity football team that when I was ‘promoted’ to 1st team defense, I wondered what he and coach Hixon were thinking. They taught me confidence in myself on another level. I became a leader -a quality that carried me through many years of this life. Sorry to have missed those two funerals. Steve Dishroon

I was scared of Coach Stallings when I played defense on the Woodward football team in the late 60's. As I matured after leaving Woodward, I realized that Coach Stallings was fair and he was a strong task master who demanded excellence in order to make me live up to my potential. His constant prodding for excellence had a profound effect on my life and I am grateful to him for the strong example he set in living a positive life. I know he'll enjoy fishing on the big lake in the sky. God bless, John Eden

Mrs. Stallings and family -
We are so sorry that Coach has passed. He was a great man and we were blessed to know him. I know I speak for Mom and Becky when I say we love you and the family. If there is anything we can do, we're here. So many wonderful memories of you and your family. But Dad's favorite memory was driving to your place to pick out a puppy and pulling in, being eye to eye with Grappler and the 5 tennis balls in his mouth! I feel sure Coach is back with is pups and will be watching over each of you. The video tribute is beautiful. Just know we are sending you lots of love, peace and praying for you. I have no doubt Dad has greeted him in Heaven <3
Much love,

What a great man, father, and coach. Being from Fitzgerald, I grew up at wrestling matches and tournaments and quickly became familiar with the Willingham program and the legendary Woodward teams. Lots of great matches at both schools and Coach Stallings was always a cordial and fair host. He will be missed because they just don't make men like this anymore. RIP coach from all your friends and fans from Fitzgerald.

I was so sorry to hear about Coach Stallings passing.I last saw him when the wrestling loft at Woodward was named for him, and what a great night that was. So many stories stretching over the decades.
It seemed that Coach was put on this earth to lead young men, and he personified old virtues that seem to be out of style - loyalty, toughness, perseverance, determination. I wish my boys could have played for him.
My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Stallings and the entire family.
Go with God Coach. You will be missed.

Coach taught us to keep going till the whistle blew, second effort won the day. (: He worked to pull that out of us and it was so good to see him again after 50 years in March at the reunion and be able to thank him personally. Although it might not have been so obvious at the time in retrospect we have all become something more because of his molding character. Condolences to all the family and friends. ):

What a wonderful man! Charismatic, generous beyond any expectation, you just wanted to be in his incomparable company! We never met a man who had a keener zest for life or capacity for fun. You could always engage him in a needling badinage (boy, would he absolutely gut me for that pretentious flourish); but when you came upon him when he was coaching, he had a laser focus on his boys and no one could distract him! And what a great and wonderfully impactful coach! And person!
Annette and family, how proud you must be of the legacy of character and "Stallings Steel" he imparted to all his athletes!
We were his friends and colleagues and our lives would have been much different and very much diminished if we had not been touched by him! God Bess you,Johnny and your family!

What can you say about a someone who was so influential in your life? Who's words and encouragement stuck with you from the moment of speech? While we had lost touch over the years, Coach played an intricate role in my life. From the moment he first gave me hope, giving something to look forward to everyday...his words about loyalty, importance, and over all being made me even more honored to know him. Coach saved me in my darkest hour, the very moment my life and the lives of those around me could have drastically changed forever; with only the simplest of words. Despite instilling in me the importance of "football, football, football," he gave me words to keep my spirit alive. So to you Coach...I salute you! You still are and will forever be a strength of presence in my life. You will always be in the heart of those who love you, and those whos lives you touched. May you fly glorious above us all; keeping your wings streched to shield us from harm. We love you and will miss you dearly. To your family... Thank you for sharing Coach with us all. You helped him be a higher guide to us. We love you and know you will always have us too.
All My Love,

To the family of Coach Stallings, I send my most sincere condolences. Coach Stallings left a lasting impression on me back in 1964 as a young 103 lb. 11th grade Wrestler at Willingham High School. We worked hard and had a lot of fun. He gave me a nickname that many still remember over 50 years ago. He was a great example for many and they have not forgotten his efforts. Thanks again Coach and may our Good Lord bless you all.

"No man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child," That is the reason Coach Stallings knees hurt. He bent over to help so many people it took a toll on him. When the Stallings' arrived at Woodward, they became a part of the Woodward family. The memories of wrestling camp, football camp and our families gathering at G.M.Acres will live on forever.
Daddy having everyone over to the dining hall for poker night and Coach claiming he never won anything. This was a man you could laugh or cry with. I have known and loved this family for over fifty years. Mrs. Stallings was like my own mother during wrestling season.Johnny Jr.and I have spent way to much time together on the mat. God bless the family because we were all blessed to be touched by Coach Stallings

Undoubtedly Coach Stallings’ will be remembered for his ability to mentor many generations of students, but for our family, he will be most remembered for his kindness, dedication and commitment to our grandparents. He and his wife were their dearest friends, in their darkest days and in the best of times. At the end of their lives, he was a steadfast source of support, full of wonderful stories, warm memories and love. His respect for the Academy and all of its greatest values was unwavering, and he epitomized loyalty, gentility and decency. We will never forget Coach Stallings and his love for our family, and our prayers and deepest sympathy are with his family.

Johnny Stallings was the coach and man who rescued and saved our wrestling team at Woodward. He came to us in 1967 when I was a junior. We were his first team. He convinced all of us that maximum effort would always be rewarded in all aspects of live...not just sports. He was my position coach in football also and asked us who was on the wrestling team. Of course half of the team raised their hands at practice, but after doing multiple 50 yd. sprints AFTER practice that number decreased each day until there were only 8 or so of us left. Those 8 would be the nucleus of his first wrestling team and 4 of us would be captains. I saw Johnny at the Wrestling loft dedication and he said that he did not think I could wrestle at 126 lbs. now...I agreed! His wife Annette raised us my junior and senior year and little Johnny was our team mascot. He and his whole family gave their ALL to Woodward Academy...There will never be another man like Johnny Stallings....I will remember him with love and respect....just the way he treated all of us...Reid Malone Class of 1968

Coach Stallings really was one of a kind ... old school in the best way ... chomping on a cigar during football practice. And over the years, he never seemed to age. And that kind-hearted chuckle of his, too. He was tough, but fair. I respected him so much, and appreciated his personality deeply. He will be missed. A true Woodward Academy personality. I have such great memories of him ... and wish the Stallings family, as always, my very best.

I don’t have to tell you what a remarkable man he was and how many lives he touched in such a positive way. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. When I visited the American Cemetery in Normandy, shortly after my mother’s passing, I found this saying on one of the monuments there.
