Obituary of William Jerry Carter

William Jerry Carter, lovingly known as Jerry, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, in Jackson, Georgia, at the age of 79. He was born on November 20, 1944, in Alma, Georgia, to James M. Carter, Sr. and Nadine Steedley Carter.

Jerry grew up on a farm in Bacon County, Georgia, where he attended Bacon County High School and excelled as a standout on the football field. He went on to further his education at the University of Georgia, where he not only earned his degree but also met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Betty” Washington. The two were married in 1966, beginning a journey that would span nearly six decades. A devoted Georgia Bulldog fan, Jerry’s loyalty to his alma mater was as steadfast as his love for his family.

Jerry dedicated his career to agriculture, beginning with the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service in Sylvester, Georgia. In 1975, he joined Asgrow Seed Company, quickly rising through the ranks to become the National Sales Manager. His career took the family across the country, from Georgia to Indiana, Michigan, and beyond. Jerry retired as the Vice President, Director of Operations in 2005 after 30 years of leadership in the agricultural industry, leaving a legacy of excellence and integrity.

A man of faith, Jerry was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, Georgia, where he served in numerous leadership roles, including as a deacon, chairman of the deacons, and leader of the “Greater Things” campaign. His commitment to his community extended beyond the church. He served as chairman of the Wellstar Sylvan Grove Hospital Board, Butts County Chamber of Commerce, and Partners for Smart Growth. He was also an active member of the Rotary Club and numerous other initiatives that enriched the community he loved.

Jerry was known for his gregarious nature, quick wit, and warm hugs. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, often using humor to brighten someone’s day or break the ice. A true friend to all, Jerry’s sincerity and genuine spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His love for the outdoors was evident in the care he took of his yard and home, and his happiest moments were those spent with his family and grandchildren.

Jerry’s life was a testament to courage and resilience as he bravely battled severe health issues for two decades. His greatest pride and joy were his family, particularly his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his sons, Charles Carter (Wendi Nancarrow) and Ashley Carter (Nicole Skaluba); his grandchildren, Chase Carter (Becca), Baylee Carter, Savannah Carter, Quinn Carter, William Carter, and Catherine Carter; his sister, Linda Toler; his uncle Dr. Doug Carter (Winnie) and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, James and Nadine Carter, and his brother, James M. Carter Jr.; and sister-in-law, Gayle Carter; brother-in-law, Dr. Stan Toler.

Jerry Carter’s warmth, laughter, and unwavering love will forever be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and friendship that will continue to inspire and guide those who loved him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 6 to 8 PM at First Baptist Church in Jackson, Georgia (1227 W. Third St, Jackson, GA 30233). The funeral service will take place on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 1 PM, with a viewing from 12 to 1 PM, also at the church. Entombment will follow at Jackson City Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jerry’s name to the First Baptist Church “Greater Things” Building Fund, honoring his dedication to his faith, love of God and his church.
